A legacy that started long before...

Before Graham’s chapter began, Bells was originally owned by Joe Bell, who ran the business for over 40 years. The name “Bells” was kept out of respect for that history - a recognition that this business is part of Durham’s Story

Pittington

Graham Kennedy began his journey in Pittington, laying the foundations of what would become Bells Fish & Chips Durham. Built on hard work and pride in traditional fish & chips, the business quickly became part of the local community.

Moving to Marshall Terrace, Gilesgate

As the business grew, Graham moved to Marshall Terrace, Gilesgate. This was a significant step forward and marked the beginning of his long-standing presence in Durham.

The Fire

In the early 2000s, the business faced one of its biggest challenges: a fire that began externally but made its way into the shop. It was a difficult period, but the resilience of the team and the loyalty of the customers carried the business through. It was a reminder that Bells wasn’t just a shop; it was part of the community.

Market Place Expansion

Bells opened an additional site in Durham’s Market Place.

This marked the first major expansion beyond a single premise and was quite the bold move, going from solely takeaway to opening a restaurant too.

Sunderland Road, Gilesgate

Having outgrown the original Marshall Terrace premises, Bells relocated a couple of hundred meters down the road to a larger site. The new Sunderland Road site allowed for improved facilities, better service flow and the room to continue growing whilst staying firmly rooted in Gilesgate.

Framwellgate Moor

Framwellgate Moor was a turning point.

Seeing potential in derelict land, the opportunity was taken to create something unique - not just for Bells, but for the wider area and the fish and chip industry as a whole.

A purpose-built site was developed, including: A 130-seat restaurant, A central production area, and space designed for future growth.

Seaham

Seaham marked the most personal chapter yet.

With a proud mining heritage and strong community roots, Seaham held special meaning. Graham’s father, Alan Kennedy, was a miner in Seaham, and opening here was more than expansion; it was about paying tribute. It was a full-circle moment and a chance for the new generation to serve a community built on the hard work of the last.

Today

From one shop in Pittington to multiple thriving locations across County Durham, Bells Fish & Chips, Durham has grown through resilience, ambition and community loyalty.
